| Description: | This design has drawn on the motifs from a needlework long cushion which was listed in the 1601 inventory of needlework in Hardwick Hall as being ?of needlework grounded white, a pear tree and slips?. The fineness and uniformity of work suggest the hand of a professional. The linen canvas was worked with silk, the ground in white floss silk in a variant of plait stitch and motifs in tent stitch. The naturalistic slips are likely to have been taken from a printed herbal. |
