| Description: | This sampler depicts a selection from the many items of interest in an area of Fife rich in historical associations. Lower Largo was the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk on whose exploits Daniel Defoe based his book "Robinson Crusoe". The Robinson Crusoe statue is to be found on the site of the cottage where Selkirk was born. Both the hotel and the viaduct are well known landmarks in Lower Largo. The Lundin Ladies' Golf Club, which celebrated its centenary in 1991, is graced by the three standing stones whose origin is unknown, though there is a suggestion that they once formed part of a stone circle. The Parish church of Upper Largo has been established there for over 1100 years. During that time it has undergone many changes, the most notable of which was the addition of the spire in 1628. It is supported on the arched roof of the chancel. |
