| Description: | Morris was not only commissioned to produce complete artworks for his clients. Occasionally, he was asked to create designs which gifted people could then make for themselves. Designs of this kind did not become the exclusive property of the client, and Morris is known to have sold the Artichoke pattern to a number of customers. Most notable of these was Mrs Margaret Beale, a highly talented needlewoman. Together with her daughters, she produced a version of the Artichoke hanging, highlighted in silk. This is displayed in the North Bedroom at Standen, their home in West Sussex which is now a property of the National Trust. |
