| Description: | This cross stitch design is based on a fine example of a woolwork portrait of the vessel on display at Buckland Abbey, Devon, the former home of Sir Francis Drake. Such pictures, which enjoyed great popularity between 1850 and 1880, were made from sail cloth, often by off-duty sailors. The stitching most usually done with cotton, linen or silk. The vessel in this picture is of particular interest because it includes a funnel, indicating that the vessel was driven by steam as well as the sails. |
