| Description: | China is probably the most famous of the "National Gardens" at Biddulph Grange Garden, created in Victorian times by James and Maria Bateman to house their collection of plants from all over the world. The garden evokes a Victorian vision of China; there is an ornate wooden bridge over the pool, and a Chinese temple and a balustraded terrace beyond. The temple is richly decorated with gilded dragons, sea horses, carved grebes and hanging bells. The colours bear very little relation to those of an authentic Chinese garden temple, but they are a faithful recreation of the original Bateman building.
