| Description: | This design is an adaptation of a cross stitch sampler worked in 1732 by seven-year-old Esther Sleepe. The sampler was given to her daughter Fanny Burney when she was eight years old. In later life Fanny achieved fame as a novelist and diarist who as a portrayer of the domestic scene was a forerunner of Jane Austen, whom she influenced. The original cross stitch sampler is on display in the Long Gallery at Parham House, Pulborough, West Sussex, England. The words that Esther stitched are: In my beginning God give me good speed that in virtue & grace I long may proceed. Esther Sleepe is my name and in my youth wrought the same and by this work you may plainly see what care my parents took of me. November the Last in the Year 1732. |
