| Description: | St.Andrews, seat of the oldest University in Scotland, has many historic buildings of note. This sampler depicts the East Tower of St. Andrews Cathedral, The West Port, and the Castle. Building of the Cathedral, founded by Bishop Arnold, began in 1161. It burned down in 1378, and refurbishment took until 1440. The Castle dates from the end of the 13th Century. The Westport was originally constructed in 1539 and extensively restored in 1843, when the side arches were added |
