| Description: | The gardens of Biddulph Grange, Staffordshire, UK, were designed in the mid-19th century by James Bateman to house his extensive collection of plants in a series of distinct but connected areas. Major features include an imitation of the Great Wall of China, the Egyptian Court, a pinetum, a fernery and a rock garden The sampler depicts a selection of items to be found in these gardens, The richly decorated Chinese temple and the ornate Chinese bridge striking colours are faithful recreations of the originals, but bear very little relation to those of an authentic Chinese temple garden. The Cheshire Cottage is decorated with the initials of James and Maria Bateman and 1856, the date of its construction. The stone frog is the work of the sculptor Waterhouse Hawkins.
