| Description: | Standen, Sussex, UK, is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts tradition which developed in reaction against the pretentious side of Victorian Design. Its architect was William Morris's friend, Philip Webb, who built it in the 1890s for the Beale family. The outside of the house incorporates different materials including pebble dash, tile hanging, weather-boarding, brick and sandstone, while the interior combines simplicity and comfort with a lightness and airiness not usually associated with Victorian homes. This is part of the National Trust Cross Stitch Collection |
