| Description: | Two very attractive 18th century watercolour paintings displayed in the National Trust property at Uppark have been combined to create this design. The paintings were by Sarah Lethieullier, Lady Fetherstonhaugh, who lived at Uppark and date from the 1750s, a period when people enjoyed making collections. The pictures are collections of plants, insects, birds and animals. The pictures show autumn nuts next to summer flowers, and English birds and butterflies next to, in one painting a West Indian little black monkey and in the other a Carolina brown squirrel. There was a menagerie recorded in the garden during the 18th century so she may have been able to see them side by side. This is part of the National Trust Cross Stitch Collection |
