| Description: | Belton House, Lincolnshire, UK, was built in 1685 - 88. It is considered to be the greatest achievement of Restoration country house architecture. The 6th Lord Brownlow was appointed Lord in Waiting when Edward VIII succeeded to the throne and was much involved in the abdication crisis. The Brownlow crest, the greyhound, is depicted on the sampler, together with crowns to symbolise fidelity to the monarchy. In heraldry the greyhound denotes loyalty to the crown.
