| Description: | Hardwick Hall in Derbyshire, UK, the creation of the formidable Bess, Countess of Shrewsbury, is one of England's finest examples of an Elizabethan great house. The house contains outstanding contemporary furniture, tapestries and needlework, many pieces identified in an inventory of 1601; a needlework exhibition is on permanent display. The sampler illustrates the entrance front of Hardwick Hall. The corner towers are topped by Bess's initials and countess's coronet. There is a depiction of her coat of arms which appears on the plaster work overmantle in the Great Hall. The smaller motifs are adaptations from the many embroideries on display in the house.
